LiftMaster Torsion Spring Replacement: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide

We stock and install LiftMaster torsion springs in Pasadena for $180 to $340, parts and labor included, with most jobs done same day. The spring is usually discovered when the garage door won’t lift, or when it lifts a few inches and stops. You’ll often hear it before you see it: a sharp bang from inside the garage that sounds, as Marcus Deller puts it, like a spring that waited until a holiday weekend to fail. The torsion spring sits on a metal shaft above the closed door, and when it breaks, the door’s full weight lands on you, the opener, or both.

We’re independent. Servo Garage Doors Pasadena services LiftMaster equipment but has no affiliation with LiftMaster corporate. We stock springs cut to the wire diameter, coil length, and inside diameter your specific LiftMaster door needs, and we quote the replacement in writing before any wrench touches the shaft.

Which LiftMaster Models This Applies To

Every LiftMaster residential door that uses a torsion spring system uses a spring matched to the door’s weight, height, and track radius, not to the opener model number. The opener doesn’t care which spring you have. What matters is whether your spring is a standard torsion spring or one from LiftMaster’s newer lines with longer cycle ratings.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners miss: LiftMaster markets springs by cycle life (10,000 cycles, 15,000 cycles, 20,000 cycles), but the physical wire diameter and coil dimensions are what determine fit. A 10,000-cycle spring and a 20,000-cycle spring for the same door will not be the same physical spring. You cannot just “upgrade” to a higher-cycle spring without re-measuring the door’s weight and re-cutting springs to match. If someone quotes you a spring without asking the door’s height, weight, and track radius, they’re guessing.

On LiftMaster doors, we typically see springs ranging from 0.207 to 0.250 inch wire diameter for single-car doors up to 16-foot wide, 7-foot tall double doors. Heavier custom doors, like the carriage-house conversions we service near Bungalow Heaven, sometimes run 0.292 inch wire or larger. The spring’s inside diameter matters too: 1.75 inches and 2 inches are the common LiftMaster residential sizes, and they are not interchangeable without changing cones and sometimes the shaft itself.

When we replace your LiftMaster torsion spring, we match the original spring’s physical measurements and install an equivalent cycle-rated spring. We can quote OEM LiftMaster replacement parts or quality aftermarket equivalents. The aftermarket springs we use are made to the same ASTM wire specification, and we’ll show you the difference on the written quote before you decide.

Signs Your LiftMaster Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your LiftMaster Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing
  • The door won’t open, or rises a few inches and stops. The spring stores the lifting energy. When it snaps, the opener motor strains against the full unloaded weight of the door, and the opener’s force settings usually stop it before it goes anywhere.
  • A loud bang from the garage, like a car backfiring. That’s the sound of the metal coil breaking under load. Owners often say they thought someone hit the garage wall from inside.
  • The door feels heavy when you disengage the opener. With the emergency release pulled, a healthy door lifts with one hand. If you can barely raise it, the spring is no longer doing its job, even if the opener still limps it up.
  • A visible gap in the spring coil. Look at the spring above the closed door. A broken spring shows a clean break, sometimes spread several inches apart. You may see a small gap or a split at one point along the coil.
  • The opener struggles and grinds, but the springs look intact. Springs lose tension as they age. A spring that has been in service for years can lose enough stored force that the opener is doing most of the work, and you’ll hear the motor laboring.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Pasadena, LiftMaster torsion spring replacement at Servo runs $180 to $340 installed. The range is driven by two things: the physical spring you need (wire diameter, inside diameter, and coil length) and whether we’re replacing one spring or both. Most doors have two springs. When one breaks, the other is almost always past its useful life, and we quote both springs when that’s the right call.

What you get with that price:

Technician checking vertical alignment of a garage door track with a level nationwide
  • Springs cut to your door’s measured weight and height, not a “close enough” generic
  • Replacement of both springs when one has failed and the other is at end of life
  • Lubrication of the spring and moving parts while we’re in there
  • A written scope and flat price before any work starts, per Clause 1 of The Haven Standard
  • A documented photo record of the failed spring and the completed work before our technician leaves
  • A 365-Day Done Right Promise on the work

The price we quote is the price on the invoice. Not an estimate that balloons after we “find” more issues. If we find something else, we photograph it, show it to you, and quote it separately in writing before we touch it. That’s Clause 4, and it’s the rule Servo was built on.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. There are things you can safely check yourself: whether the spring shows a visible break, whether the door is crooked in the tracks, whether the opener’s force settings have been adjusted recently. You can pull the emergency release and feel how heavy the door is. None of that will fix anything, but it’ll tell you what you’re dealing with.

What you should not do is attempt to remove, unwind, or replace a torsion spring yourself. These springs hold enough stored force to break bone or kill. The winding cone, the set screws, the tension bars: all of it is under load, and a spring that unwinds during removal can drive a winding bar through a hand or a face. We’ve seen the aftermath of DIY spring work in Pasadena garages. It’s not worth it. This is one repair where the cost of a professional is less than the cost of the ER visit, before you even get to the parts.

If your LiftMaster spring has failed, call us at (213) 816-2483. We’ll get a technician out same day, measure your door, name the part, and quote the range. Then do the work. In that order.
